چکیده

DNA is the genetic material of all living things, except for viruses, most of which have genomes that are RNA – not DNA. Further, the majority of viral RNA genomes are single stranded (ss) rather than duplex chains. The simplest of these ssRNA viruses, whether infecting bacteria, plants, or animals, involve a single copy of their genome, protected (“packaged”) by a single-molecule-thick spherical shell (“capsid”) of protein, which is typically smaller than 25 nanometers (nm) in radius. The small size is advantageous for minimizing the amount of viral protein needed for each viral particle (virion) and for maximizing the number of these infectious units that can be made by each host cell. Finally, and perhaps most remarkably, many ssRNA viruses can be spontaneously self-assembled by simply mixing their genome and capsid protein. These facts suggest that a ssRNA viral genome should be as compact a 3D object as possible.

Predicting the sizes of large RNA molecules.

We present a theory of the dependence on sequence of the three-dimensional size of large single-stranded (ss) RNA molecules. The work is motivated by the fact that the genomes of many viruses are large ssRNA molecules-often several thousand nucleotides long-and that these RNAs are spontaneously packaged into small rigid protein shells. We argue that there has been evolutionary pressure for the ...

In vitro reconstitution of Bluetongue virus infectious cores.

Bluetongue virus (BTV) is a vector-borne, nonenveloped icosahedral particle that is organized in two capsids, an outer capsid of two proteins, VP2 and VP5, and an inner capsid (or core) composed of two major proteins, VP7 and VP3, in two layers. The VP3 layer (subcore) encloses viral transcription complex (VP1 polymerase, VP4 capping enzyme, VP6 helicase) and a 10-segmented double-stranded (dsR...

?-Independent and Dissociate Sets on Compact Commutative Strong Hypergroups

In this paper we define ?-independent (a weak-version of independence), Kronecker and dissociate sets on hypergroups and study their properties and relationships among them and some other thin sets such as independent and Sidon sets. These sets have the lacunarity or thinness property and are very useful indeed. For example Varopoulos used the Kronecker sets to prove the Malliavin theorem. In t...

Experimental Pathways towards Developing a Rotavirus Reverse Genetics System: Synthetic Full Length Rotavirus ssRNAs Are Neither Infectious nor Translated in Permissive Cells

At present the ability to create rationally engineered mutant rotaviruses is limited because of the lack of a tractable helper virus-free reverse genetics system. Using the cell culture adapted bovine RV RF strain (G6P6 [1]), we have attempted to recover infectious RV by co-transfecting in vitro transcribed ssRNAs which are identical in sequence to the positive sense strand of each of the 11 ds...

Compact city dose it create an obligatory context for urban sustainability?

Throughout the early and mid 1990s, there was widespread faith in the compact city model's ability to provide urban sustainability. However, where compact city policies had been implemented, follow-up studies began to show the predicted benefits did not happen as they should be. The article tries to peruse two opposite approaches of "Urban Sprawl" and "Compact City", with an analytical - cri...
